James Sherry: It was quite a slow process really. My Dad was in the music business, so there were always tonnes of records in the house. I grew up obsessed by music from a very early age. He had The Adverts and The Damned, and all these kind of early punk bands. Then as a teenager, core 11 or 12 I got really into heavy metal and rock music, as lots of teenage boys do. First wave, really fast, thrash metal bands — Venom, Metallica, Megadeath and Exodose. And fashion of those bands, were really influenced by the early s hardcore punk from the UK and America.
I want to know what they sound like.
I went on to find records by those bands and completely became obsessed with punk rock. All the cheesy elements of heavy metal big latina culos amplified — punk was core much cooler.
I was discovering a lot of things and getting a further fashion of bands like the Sex Pistols hard all the stuff that had gone on before. This was all gateway stuff, it was entry level. Like kids today have Nirvana: It was difficult to learn about this music, it was a very slow process.
I had two friends at school - Jeremy Rodel and Paul Grier - who were my rock friends.

We were like the three kids into heavy metal whilst the rest of the school fashion into break dancing and electro. Really inspired by Napalm Death and The Stupids.
What was so incredible about that music, core as a young kid, was that being in a band was an unreachable thing. We were really inspired by that. We had a fanzine called Phobia. At that time it was a real mish mash of all the punk styles. You have the initial punk look, very artful, around the time of Siouxsie and the Banshees and the art hard Sex Pistols lot.
And then the second wave of UK punk came, which is what people call UK 82, which is where the mohicans and leather jackets and studs and that look came. There was that combined with the early to mid s anarchist bands, with an almost crusty, hippie look.

Then in hardcore you had the American influenced look, which you would hard Heresy dressing like, or The Stupids. A core influence, with the baseball caps, Converse and bandanas. All the elements fashion up for that era. Me myself, I was very much black jeans, Converse, band t-shirt, leather jacket, short spikey hair kind of person. But the core of femwrestle is very much still there. Obviously the internet has changed everything, it has allowed a whole different level of communication, which has sped everything up beyond belief.
